Chow Chow Coat

The Chow Chow  coat requires a lot of care and attention especially during the puppy stage when their coat is very dense and soft, extra care should be taken as it can get easily dirty and tangled which can lead to the fur getting matted and can end up taking several hours to put right which can cause stress to your puppy.

It is important that you groom your Chow Chow coat right from the start at least twice a day to familiarise your puppy with touching, brushing and grooming. Make sure you brush all over your chow including sensitive areas like tail, behind their ears on their tummy area and under their arms as these are all areas that tend to get matted more than others, these are sensitive areas your puppy may not like these areas being touched as he/she gets older if they are not used to it.

You may also want to invest in a dog blower/ dog hair dryer and use it on a very low setting, being able to use a blower on a Chow Chow coat is going to make bathing and grooming so much easier and if you intend on taking your puppy to the groomers they will use one so it is a good idea to get your Chow used to it from the start as these blowers are very loud and the pressure from them can be scary for your puppy, it can be a scary experience if not introduced at an early age.

The transitioning period from puppy coat to an adult coat can take several months, your Chow will need to be groomed every day during this time. Your  adult Chow Chow coat will be a lot easier to care for once they shed their puppy coat but it will still need to be brushed at least 2-3 times per week to prevent matting. Chow Chows shed seasonally and regular brushing is essential during this time to remove the loose hair and to avoid matting.

You want to make grooming a good experience for your puppy so it is important that they are introduced to grooming brushing and bathing from an early age and on a regular basis to condition them to the sights the sounds and the noise, especially if you plan on showing your dog because they need to be immaculately groomed.
